Maher in Iraq

Think back to the last time you gave thanks for your ability to walk. Most of us spend our lives taking this gift for granted. A task as simple as walking to the bathroom of your own home-a task performed simply and thoughtlessly many times in any given day-is a paralytic’s most ardent prayer.

Maher, a 43-year-old man living in Iraq, used to be able to walk. A tragic motor vehicle accident took away this ability 12 years ago, leaving him bed-bound and profoundly limited. He lost his independence and his ability to use his own two feet to accomplish basic everyday tasks. His mother has been faithfully taking care of him around the clock since that life-altering day, taking on every basic care-giving task, including preparing his meals, maintaining his personal hygiene, taking him to his numerous medical appointments, all while fulfilling every other household duty. To say that her plate is full is an understatement.

Many years of playing the role of full time caregiver have taken their toll on Maher’s mother. As she gets older, she is finding it more difficult to look after her son’s many needs, leaving her overwhelmed and in need of help. Unheard Cries is working with on-ground representatives in Iraq to help raise the money needed for a part-time caregiver which would alleviate this burden. The caregiver would come a few times a week to help bathe, feed, and take Maher to his appointments. This would give Maher’s mother the much needed break she longs for and deserves. The money raised would also aid in funding Maher’s physical therapy, which he participates in weekly, to help him recover some of his strength and become more functional. Please join us in assisting this family as we try to ease their struggles by extending a helping hand.
