The Nabil and Samir Families
The impact of poverty in Egypt is observed through various manifestations. There are those who live in hunger and suffer through food insecurity, not knowing where their next meal will come from. There are those who lack sufficient clothing to shelter their bodies from the often dangerously cold temperatures. There are those who lack access to an education leading them to fall into a generational cycle of destitution and hardship. There are those whose lives have been uprooted by illness and have subsequently lost their means of livelihood, leading them to live as street beggars.
Nabil, a wage worker, husband, and father of two sons, lives with his family in a humble house with a ceiling made of hay straw and a floor made of dirt. The house does not have electricity or plumbing, and with Nabil’s small income, the family cannot afford the luxury of painting the walls. With a roof as unstable as theirs, the family cannot feel safe and secure in their own home as any person deserves to feel.
Samir’s housing conditions mirror those of Nabil in many aspects, except his ceiling is made of palm branches rather than hay straw. Samir lives with his wife in a modest arrangement, and with no current source of income, the couple is struggling. Their palm branch roof is so unstable that they have resorted to using a palm tree trunk to support its middle. Despite this, they are left vulnerable to the heavy rain, dirt, and sand that frequently enter, along with no protection from the frigid cold and scorching heat.
Unheard Cries is working with on-ground representatives in Egypt to help provide more adequate housing conditions for Nabil and Samir. Your donations will aid us in building them new stable roofs, renovating their walls and flooring, and providing electricity and plumbing. These changes will undoubtedly alleviate many of their burdens and enable them to live more secure, prosperous lives.
