Hebron Hoops
Over the past year, the whole world has watched from a distance as Palestine underwent unspeakable tragedy, death, and destruction as a result of war. Children have been forced to grow up much faster than they deserve and the promise of a better day seems to grow dimmer with every explosive sound and news headline of a rising death toll. Despite this, many Palestinian youth have demonstrated incredible resilience in the face of unimaginable adversity, striving with all they have to hope for a brighter tomorrow.
In the city of Hebron, Palestine, many youth are searching for a healthy, creative outlet to express themselves and forget about the serious matters of life, if only momentarily. For this reason, Unheard Cries has collaborated with Palestinian on-ground representatives to create Hebron Hoops, a basketball academy designed to inspire and empower Hebron’s youth through sports. It aims to provide local boys and girls with a meaningful outlet to develop athletic skills, build camaraderie, and strengthen social bonds in a supportive environment. Beyond athleticism, the academy emphasizes personal growth, sportsmanship, and unity, creating a positive space for young people to thrive. Especially in Palestine.
With the successful launch of a summer tournament that saw the participation of 50 incredible youth, a winter tournament is currently underway. The championship’s target audience is girls aged 12 and up and boys aged 15 and up, which will comprise the main tournament. There will also be a children’s division for younger participants. The championship currently expects over 90 players across all divisions and is designed to be inclusive; participants need only to meet the age criteria, have an interest in basketball, and bring enthusiasm for the sport!
Funding is currently needed for tournament supplies including basketballs, trophies, medals, and prizes, as well as rent space, winter clothing for players, and referee fees.
